A New York State Police Trooper conducted a vehicle stop on Saturday, Oct. 14 in Haverstraw when 22-year-old Anthony Holewinski of Island Terrace on Long Island drove his Mercedes Benz through a steady red light on Route 202.

During the subsequent stop, the trooper reported the scent of marijuana coming from the inside of the vehicle, prompting local and state police to respond to the scene as backup.

As the six suspects in the vehicle exited for interviews with police, troopers said they found a loaded black 9mm Czech X54 handgun on the front seat and a cigarette containing marijuana in the rear passenger seat, leading to the group’s arrest.

Holewinski, 16-year-old Staten Island resident Kanel Taveras, 20-year-old Islip Terrace resident Isaac Desir, 22-year-old Brooklyn resident Marquis Morton and 20-year-old Joshua Joseph were each processed and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. 19-year-old Bensonhurst resident Sarah Benfarhat, who was sitting in the back seat was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon and one count of unlawful possession of marijuana.

Bail for Morton and Benfarhat has been set at $10,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond; for Taveras at $15,000 cash or bond; for Isaac at $25,000 cash bail or bond; for Holewinski at $20,000 cash bail or $25,000 bond and for Joseph at $25,000 cash bail or $35,000 bond.

Each of the suspects are due back in the Town of Haverstraw Court later this year to answer the charges.
