A Dutchess County teacher who was being investigated for making inappropriate comments to a student has been charged with six counts of possession of child pornography, according to New York State Police.

Steven Schwartz, 53, of Poughkeepsie, was arrested Friday following an investigation of an incident that took place between Schwartz and a student at Fishkill Plains Elementary School, said Trooper AJ Hicks.

The investigation, which was carried out by the state police along with the Dutchess County Child Advocacy Center and with assistance from the Wappinger Central School District, revealed that Schwartz possessed images of child pornography on personally owned electronic devices, Hicks said.

Schwartz was arraigned before the Town of Poughkeepsie Court and remanded to Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 14.

School officials could not be reached for comment.

Anyone with information concerning this investigation is asked to contact the New York State Police at 845-677-7300.
