ORANGE COUNTY, N.Y. – Orange County authorities will be stepping up their efforts to combat DWI on Thanksgiving weekend, according to County Executive Steven Neuhaus.

“We want to make it clear that Orange County will not tolerate drunk driving,” Neuhaus said in a statement. “We want our residents to enjoy Thanksgiving, to share all the joy that comes with this holiday, but to arrive at their destinations safely. There is no excuse for drunk driving, period.”

Neuhaus was joined by Sheriff Carl E. DuBois and Stop-DWI Coordinator Craig W. Cherry at the County’s Emergency Services Center to make the announcement on Tuesday.

Thanksgiving Eve, sometimes referred to as ‘Black Wednesday,’ is unofficially considered the busiest bar night of the year. Law enforcement across Orange County will patrol roads and highways in an effort to stop impaired driving, prevent injuries and save lives during this year’s Thanksgiving enforcement.

“While the holidays are a time of fun and happiness, inappropriate behavior behind the wheel of a car can have tragic consequences,” DuBois said. “Too many innocent lives have been taken by drunk drivers and the men and women of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office will be extra vigilant this season to ensure everyone travels safely this holiday season.”
