Injured On A Construction Site? Sobo & Sobo Explains What You Need To Know

Don't let a construction accident derail your work career.

One of the most dangerous occupations, construction jobs result in some of the highest numbers of workplace deaths each year. Due to construction's nature, which requires workers to scale buildings, carry heavy equipment and surround themselves with debris, on-job injuries are often severe.

The unfortunate fact is that most construction accidents are often avoidable. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the majority of construction sites where workers were fatally injured in 2014 and 2015 were in violation of safety standards.

However, mistakes do happen. In the time immediately following a construction accident it’s easy to be overwhelmed, which is why remaining calm and follow the proper steps in invaluable.

Seek medical attention.

Call 911 or specify someone to make the call on your behalf. The most important thing to do after any accident is to seek medical attention. If you witness the accident, make sure to only perform medical treatment that is required in an emergency – such as CPR. Do not attempt to move someone with a serious injury, as you can make the damage worse.

Take notes of the accident.

Taking notes will make it easier to repeat your story at a later date. Seek out any witnesses to help verify your story. If you are contemplating legal action following the incident, you will need to have details of what happened leading up to, during and after the incident.

Notify the employer.

Even if you've been examined by a company’s recommended doctors, you still must provide a supervisor with a written notification within 30 days of the accident.

Seek legal advice.

If an accident causes a permanent disability, missed time at work or the death of a loved one, it may be a good idea to speak with an attorney. If an employer failed to provide proper training or did not uphold safety codes and precautions, you may have a case.

If you have experienced a construction accident or know someone who has, the Law Offices of Sobo & Sobo have decades of experience. After listening to your story they will begin a comprehensive investigation and build evidence seeking the maximum amount of compensation possible.
